Jonathan Montaldo is an internationally recognized writer, editor, retreat and conference presenter whose work promotes the legacy of Thomas Merton and his teaching on the monastic contemplative tradition, a still vibrant and accessible path for those seeking to transform the quality of their daily lives.
As the Associate Director of the Merton Institute for Contemplative Living, Jonathan Montaldo created the popular ten-volume series for small group dialogue, Bridges to Contemplative Living with Thomas Merton.
As the Director of Bethany Spring, a small retreat center located one mile from the Abbey of Gethsemani, Thomas Merton’s home for twenty-seven years, Jonathan Montaldo welcomed guests from around the world. Introducing pilgrims to the Abbey, he facilitated contemplative dialogue retreats based on his series Bridges to Contemplative Living with Thomas Merton.
As the Director of the Thomas Merton Center at Bellarmine University in Louisville, Kentucky. Jonathan Montaldo maintained the largest archive of Thomas Merton’s literary and spiritual legacy. The highlight of Jonathan Montaldo’s tenure was his recruitment of the British Merton scholar and archivist, Dr. Paul M. Pearson, who today guides the international activities of the Thomas Merton Center at Bellarmine University and conserves its important archives for the 21st century.
Jonathan Montaldo was site coordinator for the 2001 General Meeting of the International Thomas Merton Society at Bellarmine University, an event that attracted four hundred participants. As the 2001-2003 President of the International Thomas Merton Society, Jonathan Montaldo served the Society’s Board of Directors and the coordinators of its world-wide chapters and established the bi-annual ITMS Daggy Scholars Retreat at the Abbey of Gethsemani.
