Evelyn Avoglia
Ph.D. in Vocal Music and Spirituality
Evelyn Avoglia is an educator with a background in the performing arts and a Master's degree in Religion and Religious Education. She has spent over three decades seeking and celebrating wholeness of body, mind and spirit through the power of sound - singing, frame drumming and dancing with worship and meditation groups. She is a song leader and has directed choral and theater groups of all ages. She has composed and performed on several recordings.
She is currently a doctoral candidate studying sound healing with an emphasis on vocal music and spirituality.
Most recent among the programs, projects and presentations which she has developed over the years is "Music Making Me Making Music" - Drumming & Chanting Towards Awakening Through The Power Of Sound.
The sounding events she conducts are designed to renew and refresh listening and sounding power. She invites folks to have fun making wonderful sounds together using our voices, drums, shakers, bells, singing bowls and other percussion instruments. Evelyn provides a setting and guides activities with intentionality and non-judgment. Authentic voices are evoked and unique pulses welcomed in the circles of sound which she convenes and facilitates.
The resulting group sound, a resonant field arising from the interplay of all members' sounds often transport participants to unaccustomed levels of awareness.
Beginnings Again is a way of awakening, unfolding, opening to the present. This recurs consistently during and after singing, chanting, drumming, playing and listening to music. Attentiveness to each beat as it is happening yields intimations of timelessness within tempo.
Avoglia says, "Music moves us - we get "carried away", enchanted. Through sound we become open to the non-ordinary world. Intentional sounding enables and expresses our life processes. It links the unconscious and conscious worlds, reveals eternity within each moment. When we sound together we begin again to live this union. Program Offerings
Drumming and Chanting Circle: 2 hour session. Activities include:
- Focusing and Relaxing, Meeting the instruments, Learning basic drum strokes, Learning simple vocalizing, Improvising with percussion and/or voices, Time for Silence.
- Hand Drum Workshop/Playshop: Half- or Full day sessions.
- Basics of hand drumming, simple toning, overtone chanting, and movement are introduced and practiced. The group then engages in these ancient techniques, often experiencing meditative states. May be adapted for your group's preferences.
- Beginnings Again Retreat: One or Two day event.
- Basics of hand drumming, simple toning, overtone chanting, and movement are introduced and practiced. The group then engages in these ancient techniques, often experiencing meditative states. More time is available for ritual, readings, silence and shared meals. Focus is on non-dogmatic, inclusive prayerful presence. All wisdom traditions and spiritual ways are honored.
- Themes: Birth and Rebirth, Coming of Age, Intergenerational Guiding and Nurturing, Creativity, Livelihood v. Job, Companionship on the Spiritual Way, Bends in the Road of Life, Transitions to Mature Adulthood, All Things Passing, Celebrations of Great Teachers, Turning of Seasons, Phases of the Moon, Dreams, et al.
